How to Split a Yacht Charter Payment in 2026 (Boatsetter Can’t)
The major boat rental marketplaces — Boatsetter and GetMyBoat, now one company — state in writing they cannot split a reservation across multiple payers. Groups have three real options: one person fronts and chases reimbursements, a manual split arranged with an owner-operator, or a commitment pool where each guest authorizes their share and is charged only when the group fills.
Why the big marketplaces won’t split it
Boatsetter and GetMyBoat (merged in late 2025) are booking marketplaces built around one renter and one card — they state in writing they cannot split reservation costs. It’s not laziness: marketplace payout, insurance, and cancellation systems are all anchored to a single paying renter. Every marketplace built since inherits the same architecture — one renter, one card, reimburse each other later.
The three ways groups actually split a charter
| Approach | How it works | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Front and chase | One card pays the operator; friends Venmo back | Organizer carries $850–$3,500 of risk and the no-shows |
| Manual split with an owner-operator | Some local fleets split payments over a contact form or invoice links | Slow, manual, and not every operator offers it |
| Commitment pool (OuiPool) | Each guest authorizes their share; charged only when the group fills; operator paid directly | Requires the group to commit by the deadline — which is the point |
For owner-operated Miami fleets — the majority of the market — the manual split usually means email chains and separate invoice links. It works, but it dies the moment a guest “forgets,” because the operator can’t hold the boat on partial money.

The bareboat wrinkle: the captain is a separate payment
On bareboat charters, US Coast Guard rules require the charterer — your group — to hire and pay the captain separately from the boat. That’s a second payment to split that most splitting methods miss entirely. OuiPool handles it in the same pool: the captain’s fee is folded into each guest’s share and paid to the captain directly.
Split it, don’t front it
Say oui — no one pays unless everyone’s in.

- Can you split a Boatsetter payment between friends?
- No — Boatsetter (which merged with GetMyBoat) states it cannot split reservation costs; one renter’s card pays in full. Friends reimburse each other afterward via Venmo or similar, with the organizer carrying the risk until they do.
- How do you collect money from friends for a boat rental?
- The reliable way is commitment-first: start a pool for the charter and date, share the link, and each friend authorizes their share. When everyone’s in, cards are charged and the boat is booked. If the group doesn’t fill the pool, every authorization is released — no chasing, no fronting.
- Do any Miami boat operators split payments?
- Some owner-operated fleets handle splits manually — typically a quote split across invoice links after a contact-form request. It works, but it’s slow and manual, and the boat isn’t held while you coordinate. A commitment pool does the same split without the back-and-forth, and the operator is paid the moment the group fills.
- Is the captain included when you split a charter?
- Not automatically — bareboat rules make the captain a separate hire and a separate payment. On OuiPool the captain fee is calculated into each guest’s share and paid to the captain directly, so the split covers everything.
